Distillation Process
Broken Earth Naturals uses
oils derived from wild crafted or naturally cultivated botanicals. We
strive for organic when it is possible to verify, and as close to nature
when certification is not feasibility. We try to investigate our sources
to be sure workers are treated fairly, and we prefer family owned
operations. All oils currently offered through our website, including the
absolutes used for our signature scents are steam or hydro distilled. We do not use
any products obtained through chemical processing or through the use of
alcohol.
In lands where
attars/ittars have been produced in the traditional manner for generations, such as India,
Turkey and Bulgaria, the recipes are tenaciously guarded. Some traditional
attars/ittars have been retained within single families for hundreds of years.
These recopies are, for all intensive purposes, their trade secrets. At Broken
Earth Naturals we respect their rights to those secrets and appreciate the years
of trial and error that have gone into creating these wonderful aromas. The
single scent offerings on our natural perfumes and attar pages are brought from
these family owned and operated facilities. Our BEN Signature Scents are
our creations using these attars and other pure hydro-distilled attars and absolutes.
Traditionally Attars
are similar to essential oils in that they are distilled using water or steam
and are the pure oils taken from the distillation of botanical material. Attars
are different from essential oils because Attars are usually herbs and flowers,
or even woods and resins which are being distilled into a base oil such as
sandalwood. These distillates are then allowed to age for varying amounts of
time. Some attars are aged for only 20 days while others may be aged for many
years. Like fine wines, when properly stored, attars grow in perfection.
There are some attars that are
extracted from their base material by heat alone, such as Choya Loban, also
known as frankincense gum. This attar is obtained through a heating process
which leaves the thick drops on the inner surface of clay pots. This thick
substance is blended into a sandalwood base and aged. Even with the sandalwood,
this is an extremely potent attar. We use it mostly in Signature scents to add
depth and power.
