Bukhoor Attar
Bukhoor "Bakoor" "Bakur", is derived from the
Arabic language and today is used to describe most incense resins or
fragranced wood chips. Traditionally these resins and wood chips were
placed over hot ambers in a hand-crafted receptacle often made of brass
and used to cleanse, purify and scent an environment. Used more often
than not for spiritual pursuits, as the beautiful aroma of traditionally
made Bukhoor is commonly reported to attract angelic beings, and repel evil
spirits.
Later, as Bakhoor gained popularity it became much more common at other
non-religious gatherings of all kinds and the traditional recipes for
Bakhoor began to be replaced by cheaper, and more readily available
ingredients. Price kept the use of traditional Bakhoor limited to the
wealthy, and spiritually initiated. Thus the term Bakhoor came to
represent a wide range of varied kinds of incenses, resins and wood chips.
Traditional Bakhoor is most
often a combination of key ingredients starting with a base of distilled
sap from the increasingly rare
Agarwood
tree (below to the right). While not on the endangered species list the
tree is controlled and managed in order to help prevent future extinction.
Bakhoor is still favored by
Sufis and is often mentioned in famous
Sufi literature. The tradition of Bakhoor remains alive today and is still
used at many Sufi gatherings, hadras (standing zikr), advanced meditations
and circles of knowledge where incense is often an integral part of these
spiritual ceremonies.
While the ingredients for
making traditional Bakhoor may be disputed the traditional Bakhoor
fragrance is intended as a gift or aid for reaching to Divine Presence, and
is therefore often made of the highest quality floral essences available
in any one given region. The Agarwood (oud) base provides a nice balance
to the sweet floral essences used to create most traditional Bakhoor.
If you have ever smelled the real thing, there is no mistaking this
wonderful scent.

A Saying From
The Most Honored Amongst Creation, Prophet Muhammad.
Perfumes and fragrance are often used
as Sufi symbolism
mentioned in Songs (Poems) (1:3,12-14; 3:6; 4:6,10-13; 5:1). They
denote the intimations of the Lover’s approach, they are signs of his
nearness – he must be near for I can smell his fragrance in the air. It is
a taste (dhawk) of better things to come, of the real thing – the Lover
himself. The fragrance and scent of costly herbs and spices make the
absent lover present and give information about him. These initial signs
are powerful enough to cause the virgins, the bride’s companions who also
adore the bridegroom, to love him (Ch1:3).
Fragrance also speaks of the human willingness to
please God in everything, offering him all we have and are.
